Benefits of Our Pollinator Gardens
Enhancing Biodiversity
Our gardens create habitats that support a wide range of plant and animal species, promoting ecological balance.
Community Engagement
These gardens serve as educational spaces, fostering community involvement and awareness about the importance of pollinators.
Sustainable Practices
We use eco-friendly materials and methods to ensure our gardens are both beautiful and sustainable.
Wildlife Support
Our gardens provide essential resources for pollinators, helping to maintain healthy populations of bees, butterflies, and birds.
Stories of Transformation
In the heart of our community, these gardens have become sanctuaries for pollinators, enhancing local ecosystems and inspiring residents to engage with nature.
Each garden tells a unique story of growth and renewal, where native plants flourish and pollinators thrive, creating a ripple effect of environmental benefits.
Our community has witnessed firsthand the positive changes these gardens bring, fostering a sense of pride and stewardship in preserving our natural heritage.
Swissvale Community Pollinator Garden
In Partnership with Swissvale Borough Council

Volunteer Contributions
Volunteers from HAP, the Shade Tree Committee, and the community have helped lay the groundwork for this project during monthly work days.
Volunteers have helped clean up litter, clear debris, seed, prune, fertilize, plant trees, and dig a drainage trench.
Expensive Habitat
Our 12,000 square feet of space will serve as an oasis for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
Community Recognition
In April of 2024 the garden was honored with the prestigious Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence.
Acknowledgements
We would like to thank Senator Jay Costa and Representative Abigail Salisbury for championing the project.
Edgewood Memorial Pollinator Garden
In Memory of Daisy Nicole
She was a young woman that had many passions, including the health and long-term welfare of the global environment for all creatures.
Daisy had an unforgettable sense of humor and spoke intelligently with great gusto about the importance of bees for all.
Although small, they are mighty.
– Daisy Nicole on human health
Her last conversation with a loved one, just before her death, included a lengthy discussion about bees, their importance in the world, and the impacts on the human food chain.
Daisy died unexpectedly at the age of 20 from an accidental overdose in Fort Collins, Colorado, where she went to pursue a degree in Environmental Science. She died just a couple of months before planning to move back home to Pittsburgh to live in Edgewood with loved ones.
While sustaining the impact of Daisy’s loss, her loved ones have also understood it is with honor and unconditional love for Daisy that they continue Daisy’s legacy by supporting her passion for bee pollination.

Kincaid Street Pollinator Garden
In partnership with Kincaid Street Community Garden
In October 2024, Humane Action Pennsylvania partnered with Kincaid Street Garden to establish a vibrant pollinator garden as part of the HAP Hive initiative — a program dedicated to creating safe, sustainable habitats for bees, butterflies, and other essential pollinators across Pennsylvania.

HAP sourced a variety of native plants from Green Hazel Native Nursery, and volunteers from Kincaid Street Garden brought the vision to life with their dedication and planting expertise.
This garden stands as a lasting example of how community collaboration and environmental stewardship can help both people and pollinators thrive.
Sankofa Village Pollinator Garden
In May 2025, members of our Youth Steering Committee (YSC) rolled up their sleeves to install a brand-new pollinator garden at Sankofa Village under the guidance of Vikki Ayanna Jones, CEO and founder of Sankofa Village, and Moses Wamalwa, HAP’s Programming Director and YSC leader.

Throughout the day, our youth volunteers created vital habitat for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators — while learning firsthand about the powerful connection between community, environment, and food justice.
We’re incredibly proud of these young advocates for taking action and grateful to Sankofa Village for partnering with us to make this project possible.
Abundant Harvest Pollinator Garden
In partnership with Operation Better Block and Carlos Thomas
In Spring 2025, Humane Action Pennsylvania (HAP) partnered with Operation Better Block and community leader Carlos Thomas to expand and enrich their existing Harvesting Greatness Farm and Garden in Homewood.
Working alongside Carlos, a dedicated cohort of Operation Better Block students completed the installation, adding a new pollinator-focused section designed to strengthen habitat for bees, butterflies, and other essential species.
HAP provided the resources and materials — including native plants, soil amendments, and educational support — to help bring the project to life.
This collaboration not only enhanced an already thriving community farm but also offered students hands-on experience in environmental stewardship, urban agriculture, and habitat restoration.
The Abundant Harvest Pollinator Garden is a flourishing example of what’s possible when youth leadership, community vision, and ecological care come together.
